Conversion of old drill hall in Shepherd's Bush for a Ballet school with changing facilities
This old Drill Hall has been converted to community uses including a children's centre and a Vietnamese social club. We refurbished the ground floor on a very low budget to create a large dance studio with a green room, classroom and changing rooms for a local ballet school. The school needs to make a rental income so the changing rooms, green room etc. are laid out to suit public use as well as their own.
The dancers require as much height as possible so old finishes to the main hall were stripped out and a new coffered ceiling installed which maximises the height between the original structural beams. Specially designed beam casings conceal lighting and give a rhythm to the space. Mirrors and barres and a sprung floor complete the fit out. New French doors open out onto a small courtyard, providing views out and somewhere for dancers cool off.
