Retrofit of a Grade II listed building that includes 127 rooms of college accommodation and facilities

The design aims to be sympathetic to the architecture of the original 1882 and 1927 buildings. The bedrooms have been upgraded to provide modern accommodation, but many of the original features such as fireplaces, cornicing, skirting and windows have been retained.

Along with essential fabric repairs carried out to reduce the long-term maintenance of the building the layout has been rationalised to provide 34 additional bedrooms.

There are ensuite bathrooms for every room and the design and integration of each new element was subject to interrogation of its impact on the existing fabric, thereby retaining the character and architectural quality of spaces.

The building is first in the city to be granted planning consent for solar panels to be fixed to the listed fabric and also includes a ground source heat pump.
