Re-modelling of the CCA foyer and shopfront at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow within the Grade A Listed Grecian Chambers

DO were succesful, through invited competition, to design and install a fresh foyer space within the CCA (Centre for Contemporary Arts) in Glasgow.

Located on bustling Sauchiehall Street, the Grade A Listed CCA (Grecian Chambers by Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson) presents 3 bays of traditional shop windows to the street. However these were failing to engage with passers by and the open plan format of the existing foyer established an intimidating threshold over which the public appeared unwilling to cross, linger or pass through.

DO worked with the closely with the CCA and it’s many stakeholders and cultural tenants to develop a design that allowed the building to showcase its activity and content at the formal shop windows, while permitting visual permeability into a more intimate foyer space behind.

The space is dynamically sub-divided throughout the day using flexible gates and screens to provide work spaces for the CCA, with the addition of permanent retail spaces for Welcome Home and Aye Aye Books, each having their own autonomy and shop window. The refurbishment allows the two young design vibrant retailers to operate around their own opening hours, while keeping the foyer animated and their stock secure.

Intimate reading and work spaces also allow visitors to informally browse the CCA archive which is available for public reference including an extended catalogue of past exhibitions, books and projects.

Working with reForm the Norm the new space emerged quickly while the building remaind in full operation, combining off-site pre-fabrication and limited in-situ construction.

Working with such a small budget and operating as the main contractor on the job, the team at DO weren’t afraid to get fully involved, utilising our own skills to paint, construct and sew the finishing touches to the spaces.

Completed in October 2011 the project was delivered within an extremely tight budget of £15 000, which required DO to work as designer and contractor alongside reForm the Norm.
