Secondary school 'without corridors' wrapped around a central atrium
Built to replace a dilapidated school building, the 10,666m2 scheme was designed 'without corridors' as part of a bid to create an open and safe environment for students.
The five-storey structure features two wings of ‘flexible’ teaching space and three vocational blocks wrapped around a central atrium. The enclosed teaching spaces are linked to open breakout learning zones which look out over the heart of the school.
At the ground floor level the building contains a cafe and library space, two flexible lecture/performance spaces and the dining room, which overlooks the adjacent recreation ground.
The shared-use site provides both a new school facility as well as a public Local Authority sports centre during the evenings and weekends.
The design achieved the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and features a passive cooling system which passes air through tubes buried in the ground before supplying it to classrooms.
