The North walkway of the Square
David Gangridge Download Original
Public town square with a functioning market, and seating areas
The architect worked with the local authorities and local regeneration group, Action Acton, to develop a town Square for the 100 Public Spaces programme.
The square is designed as a faceted granite surface and the seating is formed of large stone pieces. The seven flat facets distinguish the gradient of the site, whilst also complying with disabled regulations. Each facet is outlined by vectors of small granite setts that fan out, across the square.
The north-easterly section forms a pedestrian street with a line of trees alongside. Luminaries hang from the trees, with wires supported by steel poles. Some of the new trees planted are oaks. The paving they are set in carry an inner section of removable stone to allow for long-term growth. This space as a whole now allows for a new market to take place on a weekly basis.
Practical elements have been incorporated into the design also, such as security cameras, traffic lights, and heritage lanterns.
