Two storey glazed and copper clad rear extension to a large Victorian terraced house within a very tight site
Chalcot Crescent is in the tightly maintained conservation area of Primrose Hill. Our brief was to increase the size of an existing terrace house to more comfortably accommodate a growing family with four children.
We made good use of the unusual wedge shaped footprint of the property, adding a new 2 storey glazed and copper extension to the rear. This additional space allowed the living room to be shifted from an isolated position at the front of the first floor to the rear lower ground floor, with the dining room directly above, giving the family spaces a focus around the garden.
The copper and basalt strips used internally are repeated externally to amplify the unity between indoors and out. A mature glorious Cornus Controversa presides over upper and lower garden levels alongside a pretty floral garden. The monumental planters provide structure, which echo the form of the extension.
The extension is sympathetic and does not interrupt the original fenestration of the house. Pre-patinated brown copper was used to blend with the surrounding London stocks, whilst also fitting with the contemporary design.
