11 RMS is a mews located in the heart of Knightsbridge village. The internal planning responds to particular needs of the occupants, with the design concept driven by the desire to connect all three floors with one staircase
The stair is located centrally within the space and offers a different function at each level. At ground level its solid providing storage and division with concealed doors. Level one houses a bookshelf which together with glazed balustrading allows transparency, and at level two natural light to floods into the stair well and though the rest of the house.
The living spaces are designed as open spaces to allow natural light to enter through full height windows and the use sky lights. Light is a dominant theme both natural and artificially. Designed in collaboration with Viabizzuno, careful consideration to the warmth and colour betweens spaces was key to the success of the scheme.
The ground floor is used as a studio, for this reason the staircase, fulcrum of the project, has sliding panels integrated within the structure to divide the space between office and living - when required.
The facade is left unchallenged to preserve the visual integrity of the mews as a street.
