Sustainable academy providing a flexible learning environment located on a constrained site in Chelsea
Due to the site constraints the elevations have been built up to the boundary while utilizing every part of the roof space available to provide spaces for play and external recreation.
Above the sports hall is a semi-enclosed multi-use games area while a training space is located on the roof above the activity hall. Other play terraces extend out and between the main school departments across the site.
The school is built to complement its surrounding buildings as the potential mass of the external terraces has been broken down into fragments to create an ensemble. The upper two floors along the road are double height and complement the scale of the power station opposite.
To create a feeling of openness the building utilizes rooflights and lightwells to maximize natural light.
The building achieved a very good BREEAM rating.
