The Armadillo is a pioneering mobile timber venue showcasing the innovative possibilities of experimental cross-laminated timber (CLT) architecture while enhancing natural, spatial soundscapes.
The pavilion is the world’s first external structure crafted from a new type of CLT made using Eucalyptus timber, developed and manufactured by Xilonor. Debuted in 2024, it serves as the latest stage at the Houghton Music & Arts Festival, nestled within the historic grounds of Houghton Hall, a Grade I-listed Palladian estate built between 1722 and 1735. Originally unveiled at Trinity Buoy Wharf for the London Festival of Architecture, the Armadillo explores a new typology of low carbon sustainable, disassemblable music venues. It now resides in a tranquil woodland enclave at Houghton, where its serene surroundings transform into an otherworldly performance venue. The structure supports music, congregation, and immersive sonic experiences that captivate visitors. Developed through advanced research into CLT construction, the Armadillo consists of 42 prefabricated timber panels shaped into stepped arches of increasing size. Designed for disassembly and reuse, the pavilion prioritises sustainability by enabling easy relocation or repurposing, thereby reducing waste and extending its lifecycle. The venue’s acoustics are optimised for natural sound amplification, avoiding feedback for performers. Timber panel angles project sound outward, while slender gaps along the tessellated arches are lined with an opaque silicone membrane. Integrated programmable lighting tracks further enhance its dynamic, multi-sensory appeal. The Armadillo is the first UK external structure built using this innovative Eucalyptus-based CLT, a durable and water-repellent alternative to conventional Spruce or Pine CLT. By reimagining CLT architecture, the pavilion offers an enduring platform for experimental design and spatial soundscapes. It promises to delight audiences for years to come, both in London and its permanent home at the Houghton Music & Arts Festival.
