Through co-design with the local community, Pavilion on The Green has transformed an overlooked space in the heart of Edmonton Green into a hub of cultural activity animated by colour and play.

The pavilion now serves as a piece of social infrastructure, which played host to a Summer programme of over 60 arts, culture and workshop events following its launch. The pavilion is a meanwhile intervention, acting as a site for engagement for future plans aimed at enhancing the green and blue infrastructure of the site. With this in mind, it has been designed to be demountable and reassembled after its lifespan on site. The timber frame is formed of 10 equal segments bolted together, and supported on off-the-shelf hoarding blocks that can be subsequently reused. A steel ring beam ties the segments together, and the omission of a roof keeps the structure lightweight. A series of fabric shading fins by local maker Netty Erw create a sense of enclosure. Where possible, materials that could be reused were given a second life. Working closely with local open-access workshop BLOQS, seating platforms from another project in the borough were re-clad and repurposed, while the composite decking was sourced from a nearby block of flats having its cladding replaced. The pavilion’s round form, clear sightlines and vibrant colours were developed out of co-design sessions with local teenagers who became key collaborators. The success of the pavilion has come from the strength of local collaborations, from inception to delivery, and is now one of Enfield Council’s five ‘Culture Places’ across the borough. The stewardship of the pavilion is being co-led by the Council in collaboration with four local organisations and will continue to host arts, culture and community events in the run up to the wider transformational changes.
