Writer's Retreat
The treehouse balances a sustainable approach to architecture with an appreciation to place and landscape through its careful connection to its surroundings.
The client, a writer, sought a peaceful, creative studio space inspired by the surrounding National Landscape. The treehouse is oriented west to frame scenic views, with the writer’s desk placed beneath a large frameless window. Timber, used throughout and sourced sustainably from Marnhull, Dorset—or repurposed—helps the structure blend into its woodland setting. Oak posts and beams form the primary frame, with horizontal larch cladding and a cedar shingle roof. Reclaimed materials, like chapel floorboards for the bookcase wall and salvaged steel windows and a bathtub, reduce the building’s carbon footprint. A hidden door behind the bookcase leads to raised walkways, which wrap around the studio and accommodate the growth of an existing tree. This thoughtful design offers an eco-conscious, tranquil retreat where architecture, nature, and creativity meet.
