Knowle House is set on a beautiful sloped site near Stroud in the Cotswolds.

A contemporary glass extension expands a Grade-II Listed property, adding a living and dining space. An outbuilding was retrofitted and extended to house an office, gym, studio, and storage, framing a landscaped garden with interconnected indoor and outdoor spaces. The angled footprint maximizes space while minimizing massing near the house’s main elevation, responding to the site’s unique geometry. Large glazed doors open directly to the garden, while a sedum-covered roof with a cantilevered canopy controls solar gain. Rainwater is captured on the green roof, flowing playfully down a ‘rain chain’ into flowerbeds. Standing seam metal details complement the existing stonework. A long ‘horizon window’ frames woodland views while ensuring privacy. A slot rooflight at the junction with the Listed building highlights the original Cotswold stone wall inside. The extension is highly insulated, exceeding building regulations, and the outbuilding roof features Solar PV slates that blend seamlessly with the historic slate roof.
