Creating well-connected living spaces to fit the client's needs and interests, while also future-proofing the house for years to come

The above was the goal of the extension and renovation. The original 1920’s house had been adapted with piecemeal extensions over the decades, resulting in narrow poorly planned spaces. The design process culminated in a series of connecting rooms with differing characters, taking the approach to use the footings and external walls of the existing extensions where possible for cost efficiency. A centrally located kitchen provides the focal point around which the utility, dining, and living spaces revolve while retaining direct views and access to the large productive garden. Timber, stone and brick are used to give each space a unique internal character. The external appearance of the rear extension inverts the traditional features of the original 1920’s house. Gutters are concealed, thresholds are deep, and the white brick is reflective of the white painted and rendered local vernacular but also the chalky coastal geology found in this area of the south coast. The central chimney mediates the asymmetric roof of the new extension and forms a focal point for the new volumes at the rear. The pottery studio located within the garden forms the full stop to the ensemble with an interstitial sunny space to sit and enjoy the view on the brick ledge of the south façade.
