FY Studio

FY Studio is a retrofit of a disused lock-up garage in Voss Street, an historic cobbled mews in East London.
The project repurposed the building for environmental and socio-historical reasons while preserving the mews' character. On a compact 4x8m urban plot, landlocked on three sides, undefined spaces allow flexibility in studio use, following Featherstone Young’s "baggy space" concept seen in projects like Ty Pawb. The two-storey studio features a double-height front opening to the only trees in the mews, bringing light and airiness. A diagonal balustrade wall defines this void, with a generous first-floor window seat extending into a bench and worktop. A rear light-well and automated roof light provide daylight and ventilation, while an internal window-vent encourages cross-ventilation and social interaction. The pared-back material palette prioritises reuse and waste reduction, with OSB-lined walls and ceilings, linoleum flooring, exposed brick, and surplus terrazzo tiles in the WC/shower. Carefully balanced new openings on the street elevation enhance privacy, security, and the mews' sense of community.
