Goring House
This project illustrates a stereotypical problem facing many families.
Located within walking distance of extensive amenities and countryside, this area is highly desirable but offers limited housing quality and choice despite high prices. As the original 1960s homeowners have moved on, younger families now seek to upgrade these properties within tight budgets due to the high purchase costs. For this project, two artist clients wanted to transform their home creatively while keeping costs low. Using readily available materials, color, and careful detailing, they successfully redefined their house for around £80k, expanding its size by 50% at approximately £1,600 per m². Sustainability was a key focus, with thoughtful material choices like mineral wool insulation, timber beams, stained timber cladding, aluminum windows, and concrete blocks to improve recyclability and embrace circular economy principles. Reorienting living spaces towards the south-facing flank integrated the garden, creating a sheltered courtyard while enhancing comfort and energy efficiency through passive solar gain, reducing reliance on gas heating.
