StudioNorth’s design for The Hemmel creates a bespoke rural retreat, fulfilling the client’s vision while preserving the historic charm of The Limeworks in Northumberland.

The Hemmel's long and narrow form replicates the proportions of the former metal-clad storage structure that once adjoined the Granary. Its materiality, scale, and form complement the existing sandstone walls and slate roofs of the rural setting. The Hemmel boasts a contemporary architectural style with clean lines and minimalist detailing. The massing steps down in scale, with the lower black section housing the main living, kitchen, and dining areas, clad in charred ash vertical hardwood with an anthracite metal corrugated sheet roof. The taller, two-storey section, wrapped in corrugated Corten steel, accommodates the two bedrooms. A feature gable window offers views of the northern woodland, connecting the open-plan living space with the surrounding nature. A horizontal slot window frames views of the countryside to the west, while vaulted ceilings enhance the main living area's spaciousness. An open stair riser provides visual continuity through the central plan of The Hemmel. The design and construction involved collaboration with skilled tradespeople from nearby villages, supporting the local community. Most trades and suppliers were within a 20-mile radius of The Limeworks, a significant achievement given the rural location. Conserving the natural landscape and protecting local wildlife were central values in the design and build process. The existing mixed deciduous woodland was managed to encourage wildlife, with an understorey of berry-producing species and an adjoining field maintained to enhance species diversity. Sustainability was a key focus, with the home constructed using a super-insulated fabric to minimize energy consumption and ensure a warm, comfortable environment year-round.
