The Garden Room
Faced with the challenge of building a timber-framed structure without harming a mature magnolia tree.
The homeowners opted for a clever C-shaped design that showcased the tree as its centrepiece. This layout, combined with protective groundworks incorporating mini screw pile foundations placed strategically between the roots, enabled construction to proceed without harming the mature magnolia. The mono pitch roof form slopes towards the gardens edge, minimising impact on the neighbouring amenity, whilst beautifully framing the magnolia tree, and enhancing its’ visual prominence from within the building. Functionally, the building comprises a home gym and a reading room on either side, connected by a small storage room at the rear. The large windows seamlessly blend the interior with the garden while bathing the rooms in balanced natural light. The building celebrates timber in every aspect: a striking exposed oak frame, external timber cladding, timber window and door frames, and warm, inviting internal timber walls and ceilings. The garden room provides a delightful escape for the family, offering new functional spaces that are both private and separate from the main house. Tucked away at the rear of the garden, its location allowed for greater design flexibility, creating a truly unique and enjoyable space.
