The comprehensive renovation of RM17 aims to honor the original design while transforming it into a contemporary living space.
The existing structure possessed a sleek and distinguished character which was preserved and enhanced, with a minimal introverted design. The proposal offers a restrained and elegant site specific solution that respects the surroundings, preserving the distinctive elements of the existing building and the typical features of the Mews typology, enhancing the overall setting of the Conservation Area. RM17 project’s aim was to create a more generous and functional space. This was achieved by extending the current building by a mere 1.5 meters into the existing courtyard, thereby increasing both natural light and ventilation. This extension facilitated a reconfiguration of the internal layout. Whilst retaining the position of the main features, this resulted in a more spacious living area that can be transformed into a more secluded space, offering adaptability for potential future purposes. The facades largely maintain their existing openings. In the extension, the newly installed windows do not directly overlook the neighbouring properties. This is achieved through an outer layer of elegant vertical timber fins, coated in an off-white mineral finish, which defines the overall aesthetic of the upper floors' facade. The extension is constructed entirely from timber, and coupled with the new energy-efficient windows, it provides a seamless shield throughout the whole house. This is especially effective as the original house was insulated. Most of the materials extracted during the refurbishment process were repurposed and new electrical and heating systems were implemented. The rooftop serves not only as a terrace but also as a platform for renewable energy units, including hot water and solar panels, as well as a heat pump that supplies the underfloor heating.
