QB Wood Architects recently completed a project near the popular seaside town of Portobello, in Edinburgh which was a rear extension of a 1930s bungalow.

The existing house featured two conservatories that were hardly used and an impractical floor plan. Their approach involved removing the existing conservatories and extension to create a cohesive, open-plan space. The Client requested a space where she could read and feel connected to her garden. To achieve this, a glazed gable extending into the garden was incorporated into the design. The view perfectly frames the greenhouse and planters in the garden and connects the house to nature. A full height side window provides an unobstructed garden view while creating asymmetry in the otherwise symmetrical form. The sliding door ensures a seamless flow to the outdoors. Additional steelwork to support the window above the sliding door had to be considered and well detailed so it wasn’t visible and a distraction to the view. The result is a purposeful and harmonious space that fulfills the Client’s desires. This open plan space has a vaulted ceiling, which is illuminated by multiple strategically placed rooflights to create a spacious and bright space. Additionally, integrated bookcases within walls offer a clever solution, allowing the Client to showcase an extensive book collection without encroaching on the room’s overall space. The exterior features a modern façade achieved through a blend of light brickwork and contrasting dark grey composite cladding. This combination accentuates the pitched roof extension, creating a visually striking element that extends boldly from the rest of the extension. The Danish brick size, slightly longer than the standard UK brick, balances with the interruption of full height windows and vertical cladding.
