A contemporary extension and refurbishment with 180-degree sea views.

The design reflects the 1960’s existing terrace in a contemporary manner. The internal layout has been developed to provide a feeling of open plan living including a study and reading area, play zone and communal space as well as a separate utility area and gym to the ground floor. The first floor contains 4 bedrooms, a family bathroom, a master bedroom with dressing room with private balcony overlooking the sea. The landscaping has been designed to reflect the coastal location including the use of vertical sleepers to reflect beach groynes, gravelled area incorporating sea grasses and succulents. The design of the extension focuses on matching the scale of the adjacent terrace, including ridge, eaves and window head heights, floor and balconies levels. Our goal was to ensure that the extension respected the context and existing built form. The materials palette was selected to enhance the 60’s colour palette of the existing terrace which included orange brick, a green tiled roof and tile hanging. The main material to the new extension is a green glazed brick. This was chosen to provide a defined contrast between the new and the old. As the light changes and the skies transition throughout the day the green glazed bricks reflect these variations in colour, from gleaming emerald-green to forest-green, dark olive, then almost to black. A white mortar was selected to reflect the chalk cliffs below. A projecting wing wall clad in dark fibre cement slate contrasts to the outer skin and red/orange composite timber cladding contrast and compliments the green brick. Vertically, a recessed junction between the existing house and the extension wraps up and over the roof to define the separation between the new and the old defined with a blue engineering brick.
