We embarked on a client's request to design a sauna and plunge pool harmonising with the woodland setting.
The concept - create an unassuming "door in the woods" that, when opened, reveals a sauna integrated into the landscape. The goal was to preserve the natural beauty and outlook for guests, ensuring a sense of transparency and peacefulness. Utilising homegrown materials was a crucial aspect of our design philosophy. The timber superstructures supporting the wild green roof were sourced directly from the estate, fostering a deep connection with the environment. The understated entrance, carved into the landscape, contrasted beautifully with the clean, subtly lit sauna, creating an impressive, harmonious composition. Navigating through challenges, including the constraints posed by trees, wet ground, and power and water supplies, the team adhered to a meticulously planned timetable and budget. Trial and error, along with a topographical survey, guided us in selecting the optimal site. The complexity of the design was tackled step by step. The design not only respects but celebrates the natural contours of the site, allowing the structure to seamlessly blend into the forest. From the path, all that's visible is an unassuming metal door, fostering a sense of mystery. Upon entering, occupants are transported to an intimate and unique space, with a sauna offering panoramic views of the woodland. The peaceful ambience, accompanied by birdsong and the aroma of the damp woodland floor, creates an unforgettable and calming experience. Inclusive design principles were paramount in meeting the needs of diverse users. The careful consideration of the site's topography, mock-ups of bench footprints, and a focus on details during construction ensured an inclusive space.
