Maison pour Dodo is a colourful refurbishment and retrofit of an apartment in Stoke Newington, London, for Studio Merlin's founder and family.

The space planning goals were to create a generous yet minimal connected living space on the first floor, whilst rebalancing the size of spaces on the second to provide a larger family bathroom. As storage in residential properties is always a welcome addition but can encourage the collection of unnecessary things, the project re-articulates the layout of the apartment to provide compressed storage in less useful spaces and through the combination of architecture and interior design deliberately encourages curated minimal living in the heart of the apartment. The interior design brief was to create calming Scandinavian design with a soft French twist. Pastel-franco colour tones compliment natural whitewashed Douglas Fir, used as flooring throughout and wrapping up walls in articulated places to create high quality thresholds and informal seating with strategic views. Edges are softened / rounded throughout, whilst whitened Ash and bespoke Douglas Fir furniture created from project offcuts provide a warmer domestic tactility and reduce construction waste. Energy requirements were reduced by insulating the apartment envelope internally yet maintaining a breathable fabric, installing double glazed windows and adding loft insulation, whilst an electric boiler was installed for future proofing.
