Concertus were appointed by Suffolk County Council to design and deliver the construction of a single storey extension to provide additional office space and a larger reception / lobby area.

As this space is the entrance to the Academy, safeguarding and draft issues needed to be carefully considered, whilst ensuring the access route was Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant. Regular engagement sessions with the client and end user enabled any concerns to be addressed, specific requirements to be incorporated, and the budget to be met. The extension has a flat roof with a three-layer bitumen insulated system, and double-glazed aluminium windows and doors to help with draft concerns. This building adopted low U-values with a high air tightness to reduce the energy demands and associated CO2 emissions. New openings were created to form new doorways and window fenestrations. Natural lighting was a priority for the Academy, therefore rooflights were included within the design to allow the highest level of daylight possible to enter the space. Green WindyPods were installed around the windows to match the school colours. This extension connects to the original school building which dates back to 1912. Special consideration was taken with construction detailing to make sure connection points would be long lasting, waterproof, and in accordance with Building Control. The cladding choice contrasts the original building whilst also complementing it. Scale is minimised by accommodating areas at ground floor level, reducing the impact on the surrounding school. The school are thrilled with the extra space, improved safeguarding (through electronic access control and additional doors), and aesthetically pleasing entrance which creates a good impression for visitors and warm welcome for pupils and staff. “As a single academy trust it is essential we have reliable support for projects like this. Thank you for your support.” April Grimes, Headteacher.
