The site is part of a self build site on a Victorian care home that was demolished.
The boundaries were formed using great brickwork walls that were built at the time of the original Victorian care home and is heavily treed and partly screens the site from view from Queens road. The brickwork wall and trees forms part of our narrative to our design and process. The main front door is placed between the garage and front main living room. This sets out a passage that forms the spine of the building. There is an interrupted view from the front door, straight through the house, to the trees behind. Giving a sense of space. Living room, kitchen and dining has been placed to enjoy the sun at the time of day The spine wall will also be built out of brickwork. Our client is a brickworker and we though that the design should reference this narrative, but also a call to the Victorian brickwork wall that surround the site. The brickwork on the external elevations would only be half height, much like the wall and form a plinth for the rest of the house to sit on. The central atuim/landing allows sunlight to penetrate deep into the floor plan.
