This project involved inserting a sleeping loft and shower room within the artist’s studio, formerly the Victorian village school room.

It is a large, 52m2 double-height room with exposed roof structure. The loft is a mirror of a simpler version built in 1990 at the other end of the room.

The idea was to allow greater use of the room by upgrading it thermally and subdividing it into smaller areas. The space is difficult to heat despite secondary glazing, wall linings and additional roof insulation. A wood burner and Economy 7 radiators were ineffectual. So the opportunity was taken to upgrade the underfloor insulation at the start of 2021.

At the same time a heat pump was installed for the whole property serving the underfloor heating in the school room. This was overlaid with an engineered timber floor raising the level by 50mm.

The loft structure is built of Douglas fir columns and beams supported on bearers bolted to the external walls. Secondary elements: flooring, balustrades and encasements are made of birch plywood. A bespoke alternate tread staircase is due for installation.

New external drainage, electrical alterations, plumbing and plastering were carried out by trades people. Otherwise the project was designed and built by the architect.
