Fifi's Pottery Studio is a self-contained workshop for Aberdeenshire ceramicist Fiona Leask, designed to be a light and bright workspace created on a tight budget

The studio is intended to be a contemporary addition to the dwelling which is sustainable and sympathetic to the existing house.

Woodfibre insulation is used throughout the walls and roof, forming a breathable construction which is fully recyclable and has good thermal mass to retain heat in the winter and reduce overheating in the summer. The studio is a timber framed construction with exposed OSB board on the interior and fully slated walls and roof on the exterior.

The granite gable of the existing house is exposed on the inside of the studio so that the history of the building is part of the experience of the space. Where possible, elements of the interior are upcycled or second hand to limit cost and carbon footprint. The overhead lights are vintage elements reclaimed from an old distillery and their enclosed glass construction is perfect for a ceramics studio.

The stainless-steel units and sink are reclaimed from an old bakery and these make an excellent base for working with clay. The studio is designed so that the potter can work facing a large window with an inspirational view of the stunning garden beyond. At the road side of the building, the studio presents a fully slated gable end incorporating feature Japanese rain chains.
