Studio C102’s brief was to refurbish a small existing creative unit, providing flexible studio workspace and a gallery area for architectural photojournalist Gareth Gardner

Located in Deptford, Gareth Gardner Gallery was designed to be inherently practical and robust, subverted by playful elements. It hosts a rolling programme of exhibitions dedicated to photography of architecture and the man-altered landscape. Design of the 31sq m industrial-style space was inspired by art storage warehouses.

It features architectural elements fabricated from galvanised scaffolding, steel mesh and Valchromat solid surface. A high-gloss Watco industrial floor paint was specified to maximise the sense of space and light. A full-height mesh screen divides the front public-facing gallery area from the studio workspace, allowing daylight into the rear space while providing a hanging surface for photographic artworks.

A similar reconfigurable screen was also installed in the front window. In both cases, the scaffolding doubles-up as lighting support for the gallery spotlights. The warehouse typology is playfully subverted through the introduction of yellow and pink elements, such as the mobile warehouse steps, floor-to-ceiling shelving, chairs and lighting barn-doors. Storage is provided by Euro-standard warehouse crates.

The front gallery space can also be used for meetings and print preparation, with a demountable table and stackable chairs. A vintage floor-standing photographic enlarger has been repurposed as a digital display.
