Our clients approached us with what they thought was an impossible task - doubling the ground floor accommodation while remaining friends with their neighbours.

The brief was to create a second living room, a generous kitchen / dining room, a secure home-office, and a utility room. Plenty of daylight and good connection with the garden were top priorities.

The single storey rear extension is sandwiched between the neighbours’ existing out-houses.

From the outset, the impact of an extension on the neighbours was a primary consideration and the form was sculpted so that it did not interrupt their existing sight-lines.

Our focus was to breathe new life into a dark, inward looking Edwardian house by forging positive connectivity between inside and outside, bringing light and air deep into the ground floor accommodation, whilst also meeting the demanding brief.

The slope across the site offered the opportunity to form a natural hierarchy of spaces, separating the living room from kitchen, while linking both with the garden.

The choice of material and form allowed us to place the extension between the neighbours’ outhouses, with a simple, muted shallow pitched roof falling towards deep gutters running along the party wall lines. The long strips of triple glazed north and south facing opening roof lights were recessed down into the carcass using secret gutters, all with the aim of keeping the profile as discreet as possible.

Externally, the form is expressed with a generous glazed oak frame, held between two red brick pillars. The form is emphasised with a red brick threshold and the deep timber sections, framing the view into the garden. The smooth red bricks echo the smooth red Edwardian and internally, second hand stocks from the demolished out-house have been reused as a reminder of what went before.
