Renovation and extensions of a conservation area cottage.

Loader Monteith Architects were commissioned by Maggie and Kevin Price to renovate and extent their existing cottage within the conservation area of Fintry, Scotland. Maggie and Kevin were downsizing from a relatively large property and whilst the location was perfect, the property required adjusting to support their anticipated lifestyle.

Completed in June 2017, the project involved forming a new extension and the reconfiguration of the existing interior to create a new kitchen / dining area to the rear of the property with accompanying external terrace.

Fintry is located on the North Side of the Campsie Fells in Stirling. The garden of the property connected directly to these hills so maintaining both a visual and physical connection to this setting was a priority. Externally the proposal had to respond to strict guidelines of the planning policy for conservation areas whilst forming it's own identity. This was achieved through the form and detailing of of the extension roof. Internally there was an aspiration to reflect a Scandinavian interior in response to Maggie's time living in Stockholm. To this effect secret fixed birch veneer ply was used to line the underside of the roof enhancing the form of the vaulted ceiling. Brazilian slate flooring was used internally and externally to connect the extension to the terrace and garden beyond.
