Conversion of a redundant blacksmith workshop in an 18th century Edinburgh tenement building into a minimal holiday retreat and creative studio.
The brief was to convert a redundant blacksmith workshop into a minimal holiday retreat and creative studio in the heart of Edinburgh. Given its historic use, details of structure were to be left deliberately exposed while the use of stone, wood and clay were used to help create a sense of harmony. The main opening was opened up to cast soft, northern light across the studio while a new window opening would bring evening light into the space and give views of the large elm which sat adjacent. The furniture and cabinetry was to be designed in collaboration with Namon Gaston and made from a single oak tree.
Porteous’ Studio is the first project by Izat Arundell, a small design practice encompassing architecture, craft and food set up by Eilidh Izat and Jack Arundell. Porteous’ Studio will mainly be used as a holiday retreat for visitors to the city but Izat Arundell are also planning a series of events and monthly supper clubs throughout the coming year to explore ideas and to share the studio with fellow designers and makers.
