Private house conversion and extension
The extension and full remodelling of this two storey, mid terrace house is our latest completed design as part of a series of projects with post war, ex–local authority buildings.
The ‘host’ building, forms part of a row of four 1960s houses with flat, utilitarian façades. As many of their contemporaries, the house has great proportions and is well lit. Our proposal enhances this further and follows the clients’ brief of opening up the ground floor. The circulation is now free flowing, offering many configurations and long views through.
The design for the extension is very site specific and volumetrically differentiates the back elevation by pulling the facade in along the axis of the carefully shaped roof light.
The glass wall captures the evening sun, creates privacy and the roof light allows East light to enter the space at breakfast time. New Juliette balconies at first floor level connect the zinc roof above the exposed timber beams to the interior.
