Expansion of a top floor live/work unit into a three-bedroom home with the addition of a rooftop extension
The architects first restored the disused five-storey warehouse in 2000, creating a retail unit on the ground floor with offices and live/work units on the floors above. This project completed in 2001.
The architects returned to expand the top floor live/work unit into a three-bedroom home with the addition of a rooftop extension. Designed to minimise its visibility from the street, the extension is set back from the edge of the building and slanted from one side. The external walls and roof are finished in standing-seam zinc cladding with aluminium doors to the front and rear terraces.
This new space contains the home’s living area, which has access to the roof terraces and views towards the City, while the bedrooms are on the lower floor. Internally, the original fabric of this early 20th-century warehouse has been retained where possible, with existing brick walls and concrete lintels left exposed. The finishes and fittings for the bathrooms and kitchen complement the existing warehouse.
