White brick of Block Two
Andrew Putler (website) Download Original
High density housing scheme for large families of East London's Bangladeshi community on a compact 0.72 hectare inner city site
The design, completed in partnership with S333 Architects, included extending and enhancing an important local street and creating new public spaces, shops, services and facilities whilst providing a diverse range and choice of modern new living environments.
The complete programme is accomodated within six blocks ranging from three to four-storey buildings to a twenty-storey tower. The street-based urban form with a terrace of family homes, a perimeter block and the high rise block focused on two new streets, ensures simplified access arrangements.
Of the affordable rent units, 43 are family sized, compromising large five and six bed contemporary terrace homes directly addressing the street, and three and four bed maisonettes stacked with access to private front doors. Importantly none of these are more than half a flight from street level with all lower units benefiting from access via a shared courtyard.
