Garden room
Refurbishment and extension of a 1930s detached house in Twickenham, to create a contemporary family home
The project's aim was to transform a badly laid out 1930s house, with a small kitchen and a weak visual connection to its rear garden. We demolished the existing conservatory and replaced it with a rendered white box, under permitted development. This was mirrored in a garden room at the rear of the garden.
Western red cedar boards were used to line the external walls and form brie-soleil on the roof of the garden room, whilst softening up the rendered walls. The walls themselves extend into and wrap around the remodelled garden to form planting beds. Internally an open plan kitchen, dining and living area is serviced by a new utility and WC.
A set of two sliding doors maximises light and views onto the garden. On upper floors we created a new master with en-suite and refurbished the rest of the house. Materials were a simple palate of ceramic tiling, timber doors and worktops, complimented with industrial style lighting.
