Refurbishment of a Victorian vicarage to house a study and social centre with two additional buildings, a 16 classroom teaching block and a 420 seat assembly hall with a conservation area
The teaching block and auditorium are sited on either side of the former Victorian vicarage, Otway House, and together constitute the new sixth form centre.
The restored and remodelled Otway House’s first floor ceiling has been removed, revealing the original roof structure and improving acoustic conditions. New timber linings establish new incisions and openings between rooms.
Constructed in load-bearing brick, the classroom block employs a traditional brickwork diaper pattern found elsewhere within the school site.
The gabled facades on all four sides of the assembly hall develop the diaper pattern into a three dimensional bas-relief. Inside the assembly hall, a steel structural frame creates a single interior space with the pitched roofs becoming a folded plane overhead.
Externally, the three buildings are connected by a series of terraces and sunken courtyards.
