Renovation and addition of a new bedroom wing to Sir Basil Spence's weekend retreat at Beaulieu, Hampshire
Built in 1961 as a weekend retreat for architect Sir Basil Spence, the architects were commissioned to extend and renovate the existing building and to reinstate the original landscape scheme by Sylvia Crowe.
The extension provides two bedrooms – one for the owners, the other for their two young children – and a luxurious bathroom, in a new wing to the rear of the existing house. Echoing Spence’s timber-clad box, the extension is primarily a cedar-clad volume, though constructed with a steel portal frame and left untreated.
Internally, white painted softwood boarding extends to door-head height in reference to Spence, and the spaces are complemented by simple oak furniture. Pardey also remodeled Spence’s stair tower, enclosing it with glass and timber fins in a conscious reference to Spence’s ‘Chapel of Industry’ at Coventry Cathedral.
