Private new-build family house for a retired couple on a flat agricultural site
The site lies on the edge of a ribbon development village in rural Bedfordshire and is surrounded by mature trees, hedgerows and arable fields. The abstract nature of the surrounding landscape and vernacular buildings informed the design of the house, resulting in a simple linear form with a horizontal emphasis.
A sweet chestnut clad box is cantilevered off a solid masonry and glass plinth. The material composition is that of horizontal layers of slate, white render, timber and gabion stone.
The house also incorporates sustainable technologies such as rainwater recycling and a ventilation system with heat recovery, and the external landscaping forms a transition between the domestic and agricultural environments.
