Ermine Road infill
The new house in Lewisham offers a compelling response to London’s housing needs through innovative design on a compact end-of-terrace site.
This two-bedroom family home utilizes a split-level configuration to maximize spatial efficiency while promoting natural light and enhancing internal flow. Drawing inspiration from the local Victorian context, the façade combines traditional London stock brick with contemporary composite cladding and a standing seam zinc roof, creating a harmonious yet distinct identity. This thoughtful material palette respects the surrounding architecture while introducing a modern aesthetic. The design features well-defined external terraces and gardens, aligning with council standards and promoting biodiversity. These outdoor spaces foster a strong connection to nature, providing inviting areas for family activities and relaxation. Sustainability is central to the project, incorporating a contemporary heat exchange system and strategic placements of roof lights and light wells to optimize energy efficiency and natural illumination. Accessibility is prioritized throughout the layout, ensuring that the home is welcoming for all users. Positioned with sensitivity to the existing streetscape, the house maintains a modest profile that complements its Victorian neighbours. The engaging south elevation enhances the visual experience for residents and passers-by alike, making a positive contribution to the urban landscape. This project exemplifies how high-quality, contextually aware architecture can transform underutilized spaces into vibrant, sustainable homes. We believe the new house at Ermine Road in Lewisham stands as a benchmark for future infill developments, deserving recognition at the AJ Small Project Awards.
