This project focused on retrofitting and upgrading the existing fabric and structure, rather than opting for demolition and new construction.
The original house, designed in the mid-1970s as part of the Californian Case Study house movement, posed challenges due to its poor performance in the damp British climate. Despite this, the team aimed to preserve its character, retaining much of the original structure, including the open-plan layout and panoramic glazing. Rather than demolishing, the project focused on improving environmental performance and liveability. Floor-to-ceiling windows were replaced with modern double-glazed units, and the flat roof and heating system were upgraded with high-performance insulation and low-energy systems. These changes resolved issues like damp, mould, and poor insulation while preserving the home's aesthetic and spirit. Though demolition and rebuild may have been more cost-effective, the decision to retain the structure was driven by a desire to honour the original architectural vision. Located within a conservation area, the project reused and repurposed key elements—including relocating the original wood burners to houseboats—minimising waste and supporting sustainability. The retrofit transformed the home into a warm, efficient, and comfortable space, proving that thoughtful upgrades can breathe new life into a building while respecting its historical and architectural value.
