Dulwich Wood Outdoor Classroom
Dulwich Wood Primary School, located in South-East London, is a vibrant and nurturing community school that celebrates diversity.
The Outdoor Classroom transforms a previously unused narrow space at the North end of the school building into a dynamic learning environment. Designed to foster creativity and exploration, the classroom features a tiered auditorium accommodating up to 30 students, along with a central round demonstration table. Four spacious workbenches, crafted from pressure-treated pine, provide flexible seating for students of all ages, with raised platforms for smaller children. Each bench is equipped with a work surface made from recycled plastic packaging, polycarbonate roofs to protect against the elements, and shelves with open timber structures for hanging, drying, or displaying projects. The timber cross-bracing, stained in the school’s colours, adds a vibrant and cohesive aesthetic, while large storage boxes beneath the benches keep materials organized and accessible. A converted bike shelter, generously donated by Southwark Council, doubles as a storage unit for materials and stools when the classroom is not in use. Four sinks along the wall ensure easy access to water for handwashing and cleaning. The floor is covered in recycled tyre mulch, providing a safe, defined workspace. Outdoor classrooms have been shown to enhance students’ physical health by promoting activity, improving motor skills and coordination. They also support social and emotional development, reduce stress, and boost engagement and academic performance by providing practical, hands-on experiences. The Outdoor Science Classroom was conceived, planned, and designed by dedicated parent volunteers, with input from the school community. Funding was secured through years of school fundraising events and sponsorship from local contractors Elkins and associated subcontractors. This collaborative effort exemplifies how resourcefulness and community spirit can come together to create an inspiring space for learning and discovery.
