The objective of this project was to replace a deteriorating 1950s tiny concrete storm door extension on a Grade B listed building with a thoughtfully designed and spacious porch.
The existing structure was not only outdated but also restricted access to the original front entrance, creating a cramped, damp and uninviting entryway. The new design aimed to create a welcoming and functional space that would enhance both the practicality and aesthetic appeal of the home. The project called for a finely crafted yet compact porch, carefully designed to blend contemporary elements with the historic character of the house. The new porch needed to complement the traditional stone detailing of the existing structure while maintaining a connection to a modern car port. Achieving this delicate balance required a thoughtful selection of materials and architectural features. To ensure durability and longevity, the extension was clad in Sioo-treated thermo-pine, a material chosen for its natural appearance and stability overtime. The use of anthracite zinc roofing and detailing added a refined, modern touch while maintaining a sense of harmony with the original building. The structure was designed to maximise natural light, creating a bright and airy transitional space that frames a picturesque view of the garden entrance path from the main hall. While the porch remains open and inviting, a modern adaptation of the traditional storm door was incorporated into the design. This allows the homeowners to enclose the space when needed, providing privacy and protection from the elements while preserving the openness of the glazed porch. The result is a seamless blend of old and new — enhancing both the functionality and beauty of the home’s entrance.
