The project comprises the remodelling of a 1980s H-plan, pattern-book bungalow for the architect’s parents
Perched between views of the North Sea and East Wood, ‘North Sea East Wood’ transforms a three-bedroom bungalow into a spatially fluid, site-specific home. The redesign breaks the rigid room-based layout, instead structuring spaces around views, solar gain, and the site's steep topography. The extension features local flint and reclaimed clay roof tiles, with a monolithic flint finish distinguishing it from the original brick structure. Face-mounted picture windows punctuate the inward-facing flint planes around a central chimney, creating an almost internal composition. Inside, the home balances intimate living areas with expansive social spaces, offering places for reading, contemplation, and gatherings. Designed uniquely for its owners and site, it contrasts the typical coastal style of floor-to-ceiling glazing and wrap-around verandas.
