To commemorate the 450th anniversary of William Lambe’s Mastership of the Clothworkers’ Company, Freehaus were appointed to design a new organ gallery and oversee the organ restoration at St James’ Church, Islington.

The project enhances the organ’s sound projection across the Chancel and Nave, supporting both the congregation and the church’s outreach programme. Freehaus collaborated with the Diocesan Advisory Committee and organ specialist Paul Mortier to optimize acoustics while respecting the Grade II listed building. St James’ has evolved over 145 years, requiring a response that is bold yet contextually sensitive. A discreet steel platform integrates seamlessly with Gray and Davison’s original design, with gilded pipes floating above to create a sense of lightness. Renatus crafted a perforated acoustic screen addressing the Nave, its geometric wooden frame echoing the Apse’s frieze. The casework soffit continues this narrative, reinforcing St James’ distinctive geometry. The design celebrates music and mathematics, stacking 8’ and 4’ ranks vertically within the south aisle’s sloping roof. Antique gold gilding unifies new and original pipes, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic. Father John describes the organ case as “a hugely successful synthesis of sound and visual creativity.”
