The 'Hidden Studio' is a secluded workspace designed for a couple at the end of their garden.

As you walk along the garden path, you first pass a private rear garden, then a covered colonnade—creating layers of separation between home and work. The project aimed to establish an office that felt both detached from the house and immersed in the garden. Natural light was carefully considered, with the colonnade reducing glare and rooflights providing task lighting. The space includes two interconnected offices (one with a meeting room and kitchenette), a small shower room, and a store. Locally sourced materials prioritised sustainability within budget. UK-grown larch was used for the colonnade and cladding, while European spruce plywood formed the internal finishes, including doors, walls, ceilings, and furniture. The timber structure primarily consists of Swedish pine joists and German whitewood glulam, with minimal steel used only in concealed connections. Smart technology enables remote operation from the house, including energy-efficient infrared heating, smart lighting, and automated blinds. Sustainable drainage is integrated, with the colonnade’s structural glazing directing rainwater into a pebble drain and soakaways below.
