In the midst of the pandemic, Lila, a neurosurgeon, and Duncan, a software engineer, sought a reprieve from their bustling family life.

Desiring a dedicated space for work, reflection, and leisure, they approached us to transform their neglected garage into a secluded haven. Nestled at the base of a 1970s four-story end-of-terrace house, the garage presented unique challenges, notably the absence of natural light in its 8-meter depth. Rather than viewing the limited light as a hindrance, we leveraged it as an opportunity to manipulate human perception. Contrary to the common belief that painting a room white enhances natural light, we opted for dark grey tones. This unconventional choice played a visual trick, making the subdued light more pronounced through the power of contrast. In addition, we recognized that in spaces with limited light, textured materials outperform smooth ones. The filtered light washing gently over the room highlighted the uneven character of textured materials, creating an atmosphere that embraced the lack of direct sunlight. Functionally divided, the space features a front desk area for work and contemplation, while the rear serves as a cozy reading and music-listening nook. Infused with the couple's distinct personalities, the entrance welcomes visitors with a medical skeleton named Adam, reflecting Lila's profession. The shelves adorned with books on medicine, fantasy, and science fiction further showcase the diverse passions of Duncan and Lila, weaving their individuality into the fabric of the transformed space. This project defies conventional design norms, proving that innovation can arise even in the face of constraints, ultimately providing a sanctuary for this dynamic couple amidst the challenges of the pandemic.
