PORTER ROBSON were commissioned to design an addition to the existing rectory for a private client.
The client sought to design a proposal that would add to the architectural value of the property whilst not be in conflict with the existing architecture. The client’s interests were in classical architecture and music, particularly Baroque. The design was conceived of the concept of the relationship between architecture and music. Inspiration was found in the famous quote by Goethe “Music is liquid architecture; architecture is frozen music”. Architecture and music have long held many parallels; tone, texture, rhythm, depth, are all words to describe the two forms of composition and both start with an idea and a pencil. Research into the mathematics of Fibonacci (sacred geometry) and Pythagoras (ratios - frequency) inspired the use of geometry to complement the ecclesial heritage of the existing building, the use of mathematical ratios informed the proportions and rhythm of the space and façade. Formed in stone and glass, the minimal palette of high-quality sustainable materials creates a distinctive rhythmic piece of architecture. The idea of rhythm and repetition was continued into the construction of the building with a modular approach to the stone setting and numeric organisation of the individual pieces. The project detailing and sequencing of the construction phase was orchestrated by the team so that each package of the project could be layered together to effectively manage the trade interfaces. The project embodies the relationship between space and time, connecting with the landscape, catching light and shadow through the day. Creating a place of enjoyment and relaxation.
