Our brief was to extend this 50sqm flat to create a living space with 3 loft bedrooms in Mapesbury conservation area.

“The Room in a Roof” resolves itself in a creative and original manner by flipping the brief, maximising the grandeur of the mansion house roof. The Ply panelled entrance draws the visitor into a vaulted room bathed in light. The perimeter has ample storage for a clutter free home.

The kitchen island snakes up the split level to form a generous dining area & living room. A 4m long handmade steel light hovers above delicately above a bespoke dining table, completing the centre piece. On the floor below, three elegant rooms complete this sanctuary for a growing family. For our client everything had to have its place and it all needed to be hidden behind the exquisite birch ply joinery.

To that end we co-created a highly designed furniture solution including repurposing the bay roof as a dedicated play nook for the children. We crafted this high-quality outcome on a tight budget using simple details & a restrained palette of natural materials. The birch ply joinery with blackened steel accents, oak floors & tiles required little onward processing so kept costs down.

We worked very closely with the joiner to interrogate the existing conditions space developing all the fabrication information for the project. The blackened steel accents & feature light were developed with a blacksmith to create a lively textured focal point to the home. This way we were able deliver on the vision in what appears an effortless manner.

An upgraded fabric of 0.19w/sqmK future-proofed the home environmentally. MVHR & air conditioning ensure a high-quality internal environment despite its proximity to the train line & one of the most polluted areas of Brent.

Annual CO2 emissions data (requested in kg/m2/year) was not provided.
