Urban Retreat: Garden Studio + Ground Floor Refurbishment
The Garden Studio requires a relatively large space since the artist usually works on large format paintings; therefore, we aimed to insert a large sculpture-like structure composed of loose structural elements to reduce its mass.
Taking inspiration from traditional garden pergolas, the Studio’s forest-like structure is created with clusters of relatively small timber posts. In this way, the relatively large volume of studio space is dissolved into layers of timber arrays. The timber is charred, painted white and then brushed, not only for the longevity of the material but also to respond to the existing birch trees within the garden.
The way the timber posts are organised they also form lanterns for external lighting, doorways and openings. A slide and turn glazed door system installed in between the timber posts blurred the indoor/outdoor boundary.
