White Red Architects presents a project with great impact and personal significance; their new study space expanding the Member’s Room at the British Library, Kings Cross, London

Having spent the lead up to their Part 3 professional exams studying at The British Library, White Red Architects immersed themselves in the variety of spaces and functions on offer, and also came up with the idea to set up their practice. Working on this project has allowed them to give something back to this meaningful place.

White Red Architects tendered for the expansion project in 2018 and impressed the client by how closely their proposal matched how the Membership Manager imagined the new space might look and function. Caroline Brown, Head of Commercial at the British Library, said: “The finished room is considerate of the existing design and features of the Members’ Room but with a unique character conducive to quiet working and study. It is already very popular among Members.

Further, we were impressed with the consultation process throughout design development and after construction work had commenced. I know that my colleagues and project managers have enjoyed and found it easy to work with White Red during this project. Our thanks to White Red Architects for a job very well done.” The room features new built-in workstations and desk space for use by the members as a dedicated quiet study area. Finished in oak, brass and perforated plasterboard the design for the Member’s Room references the palette chosen by Colin St John Wilson present in the rest of the British Library.

The new space also references the original grid which runs through walls, floors, and ceilings organizing the workstations, lighting and floor finishes giving the room a unique character.
