Refurbishment of purpose-built music hall from Victorian era, addressing technical and structural concerns to restore building to its original use.
At Wilton’s Music Hall in east London, Tim Ronalds Architects undertook a sensitive restoration of the Grade II* listed building, which has been a producing venue since 2004. ‘Do no more than essential’ was the architect’s guiding principle through the building works and the restoration has kept everything that it possibly could.
The work, carried out in two phases, started on site in July 2012 and was completed in September 2015. Ronalds has returned the front-of-house facilities to full use, establishing a sequence of connected bars on the lower floors of three of the venue’s properties. Rather than rebuild collapsing brickwork, Ronalds has stabilised it through the introduction of dowels. Where it had doubled joists to support public loadings, the old floor and ceiling boards were numbered and returned to their original locations.
